How is FOPJC funded?
We receive funds from a variety of sources including the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Department of Juvenile Justice and the City of Portsmouth. We also are supported by private foundations, corporations and caring individuals.
How are your programs effective?
A child with a CASA volunteer is more likely to be adopted, half as likely to re-enter foster care, substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care, and more likely to have a plan for permanency, especially children of color.

On average, 80% of young people ordered to perform community services successfully complete their assignments.

What is involved with a background check?
First, you must give us permission to conduct a background check by completing the Commonwealth of Virginia Authority for Release of Information form. You must complete a Virginia Department of Social Services Central Registry Release of Information form, which allows a search of all Child Protective Services records. Finally, the National Criminal Background Check form allows us to access Virginia and National FBI criminal records. You will be required to provide a photo ID, usually a driver’s license. Fingerprints are submitted along with these forms to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Richmond. We provide all the required materials and forms. There is no cost to you.
If I can't volunteer or donate, what else can I do to help?
You can invite us to speak at your civic league, church or professional organization.
You can support our fundraising events and initiatives. Check our website or Facebook page for information.

You can advocate for programs and services to strengthen Portsmouth families and protect children.
